Curtains VS Blinds, The Advantages & Disadvantages of Both

When it comes to curtains and blinds, people often can’t decide which would work best for them and knowing the advantages and disadvantages of both would come in handy. Whereas they do work well together, for some homes this may be too much, so we at Direct Carpets and Curtains are here to share our knowledge with you in the hope to help you make a final decision. Why Choose Blinds?

Blinds are a great option for smaller windows, or for homes which don’t have a lot of interior space as they don’t take up much room. They come in many different styles, whether that be Venetian, Vertical or Roller. We also have many colours available to match your homes décor. Here is a little about each kind of blind we supply and install here at Direct Carpets & Curtains:

Venetian & Roman Blinds

We house a great selection of Venetian and Roman blinds in a selection of fabrics. These are normally a favourite of heritage homes in the UK as they fit with the traditional aesthetic. With these blinds, you can easily adjust the amount of light entering the room. They also come with an added layer of insulation which definitely helps in the winter months!

The only big issue with these blinds is that they can be harder to clean due to the style of them. Venetian blinds come with many slats which can take a little longer to dust off and properly clean. Due to Roman blinds being made of layered fabric, they also need a little bit more care when cleaning.

Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds tend to be used more in corporate or commercial properties; however, they are still a favourite for homes. Ideal for large windows or doors which let in a lot of light, they are available in many colours to fit any interior décor. They are limited on the fabrics which you can use but you can personalise the slat width that fits your space best.

A downside to these blinds is if there is a breeze coming through the window, they can be quite noisy. This could be distracting for if you’re watching telly or if you’re someone who works from home.

Roller Blinds

Ideal for any room of your home, Roller blinds bring a slick and seamless look to your space. We also have a range of Velux blinds available which can be controlled remotely for windows in hard-to-reach places.

However, a downslide to these blinds is that they can’t fit in all window spaces, this could be an issue for some people if they want to dress all the windows in their home with the same blinds. This would entirely depend on the dimensions so we would recommend giving us a call to get a custom quote.

When Are Curtains Better?

Curtains are a great way to dress up any space and add more character to a room, whilst also providing shade from the sun and extra insulation during the colder months. You can also incorporate them into the design of your interior by using the same fabrics as you have for cushions or lamp shades. For extra protection against light, you could pair curtains with blinds – this also helps control light levels much easier.

A downside to curtains is that they can often take up a lot of room in your home if you are living in a smaller space. They can often make a room seem smaller due to the amount of wall space they cover. They are also a little more expensive than blinds but depending on the length of time you intend on having them, this may work out to be more cost affective in the long run.
